Bowlusville

[edit]

Any reason why Bowlusville is listed as being in Champaign County when it is actually in Clark County? All Bowlusville buildings are south of County Line Road and thus in Clark County. --96.11.220.138 (talk) 19:37, 7 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology

"It takes its name from the French word for 'plain' as the land here is very flat." I assume this is referring to the word champagne, but that does not mean plain--it is an old form of campagne, countryside. Since this statement is not supported by a reference anyway, I am going to investigate the etymology a bit more, unless someone else knows for sure.--Mwillia9 00:58, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Champaign is actually an English word meaning level, open country—it's been in the language for over 600 years. According to the OED it was taken from the central French champaigne, and was originally spelled in Middle English as champayne; in 1605 Shakespeare spelled it Champains. And while the word in Modern French means any old countryside, when it came to English it and all its cognates almost certainly meant level country; the OED gives its origin thus: "L. Campania ‘plain, level country’, spec. the name of the rich and level province of Italy lying south-west of the Tiber, afterwards specially distinguished as Campagna de Roma; in later Latin applied to many similar tracts, and as a common noun; f. campus level field. "
All that said, the source cited in this article simply says it's "Named For...French word meaning 'open level country'" so that's what the article will say.--76.28.236.209 (talk) 03:56, 24 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
