Redirect
[edit]"For formalities sake"? I think this should just redirect to the main DLSU article. -TheCoffee 09:53, 23 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- I'm redirecting it to the main DLSU article. Don't see any reason why not to. It seems that all the content in this article was already covered in the main article anyway. TheCoffee 14:49, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Can we also add the discussion from the first DLSU article?Rmcsamson 07:10, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
- Done. --Howard the Duck | talk, 07:17, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
Copyright violation?
[edit]Some of the texts are copied directly from DLSU's site. Would that be a copyright violation? Or is the information in De La Salle site for public domain? --Jojit fb 09:34, 19 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Seeing that there's a copyright notice at the bottom of the DLSU site, I think it should be changed. And besides, the whole article is starting to sound like official DLSU promotional material. TheCoffee 08:59, 20 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- I also mentioned regarding the copyright violation here --Jojit fb 04:57, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- I changed the first section of the article. BTW, is it right to classify an article with links to where he got it as an copyright violation?
Most of the photos are copyrighted.
Degree programs
[edit]Another comment, should we have to list all the degree programs of the university? I think this is unnecessary. It is not encyclopedic. I propose that it should be removed. --Jojit fb 10:53, 19 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- I agree. --Ronaldo Guevara 09:02, 2 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- What's on offer also changes. They've got programmes they offered then but not anymore now and vice versa.
Kinaroroonan
[edit]The address on official university letterheads, envelopes, etc. say "Taft Avenue". I think this probably means that Manila city authorities have decided not to rename the road anymore. (What I think about this isn't really relevant.) Anyone else have info on this?
- Everyone knows it as Taft Avenue. I have yet to see a "Diokno Avenue" street sign. --Howard the Duck | talk, 09:26, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
Name in latin
[edit]I am trying to translate this in latin and would like to request help.Salle comes from german for hall: sala, yes, like in Tagalog/Spanish for room. I don't know if Universitas Salae would be correct.--Jondel 01:01, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- de la salle is a proper name in fact it is a name of a saint. st. john baptist de la salle, the founder of the fsc who founded the university. some call him st. la salle or de la salle. (Added 10:07, 23 April 2006 by 203.87.188.90)
- The anon user is correct, but doesn't directly answer the question. I would imagine that the official Latin translation takes the name "de la Salle" and Latin-ifies it without analysing the parts (Universitas Delasallensis or the like); but the important thing to note is that there almost certainly is already an official translation, at least of the name of the order. That's what you should be hunting for. /blahedo (t) 00:24, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
- I've been hunting very hard and still am hunting.--Jondel 07:28, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
- The official and Latin name of the Lasallian Brothers is "Fratres Scholarum Christianarum" 58.69.180.83 10:12, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Neutrality of 'Notable Alumni' Section
[edit]There must be some way to cite the fields the people listed as 'notable alumni' were in such that the entry becomes neutral. It would also be good if the credentials of those cited in the list (degrees from DLSU, field, connection to DLSU at present if any) are made, instead of using highly-disputable weasel statements such as "top columnist" or "top" whatever, without how this person's being "top" remains unestablished. Other universities have tables which might be useful. I'll watch this section for 24 hours and will remove any weasel-esque appelations unless action is taken. Rmcsamson 14:21, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
- Also, the notable alumni section is too long and doesn't look right. Maybe it should be moved to a separate article. It should be trimmed down as well, i don't think it is necessary to make a list that long, some people listed there aren't even well-known enough to be called "notable". Mithril tdd1 16:50, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- I've cleaned it up. Perhaps we can use the format seen in other college articles. --Howard the Duck | talk, 03:58, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
- That would work, but we have to find out their relation to DLSU for the format to work out. Having a table with names only won't look right. Mithril tdd1 05:20, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
- How about splitting them into columns? Like {{col-start}} {{col-break}} and {{col-end}}? --Howard the Duck | talk, 09:27, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
- I think it is also of importance to actually establish if these people attended La Salle or were at least conferred honorary degrees. For example, there are no resources pointing to the Zobels or Ayalas as graduates of La Salle.
Issues regarding the Notable alumni section have been resolved at last. The list is shorter for now but is much better than the red link mess before. -- Mithril Cloud 11:46, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
A question:
[edit]When was the University system created? In other words, when did the university along Taft stopped to be known as "De La Salle University" but instead it came to be known as "De La Salle University-Manila"? --Howard the Duck 06:04, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
- The establisment of the system must have been very gradual. For example, they only established College of Saint Benilde when they bought the house and lot across Taft Avenue, then they decided to establish the college of medicine when they got the Emilio Aguinaldo college. As to the exact date, I don't know. --Jondel 06:27, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
Article cleanup
[edit]Wow, somebody had the nerve to place this article on the Wikipedia:Good_articles#Educational_institutions, but of course I took it out since it's far from being a good article. The Ateneo article deserves to be called good, but this one doesn't.
Anyway, any suggestions on how to improve this article? I'm thinking of taking out the Current Events and Notable alumni sections. The current events isn't encyclopedic, unless it gets integrated to the history section. The notable alumni is a very huge eyesore of red links and needs to be in a separate article or reduce the names to the most relevant ones.
Most of the article is dominated by lists and has little substance. There's also the copying of articles from the official site. The registered and anonymous contributors should at least introduce themselves or participate in discussions here. --- Mithril tdd1
- I've made some comments regarding the "notable alumni" section already. I agree about the current events section. That section evolved becomes some earlier versions of the article used copyrighted text, which was deleted.Rmcsamson 10:01, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
- I'll try to do some research on DLSU's history, this will take a long while. --Mithril tdd1 08:20, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
Someone also has to remove the copyrighted images. This article's teeming with them. Rmcsamson 11:47, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
- Which are the copyrighted images and which are self-made? --Mithril tdd1 12:11, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
- I suggest going through the La Salle websites and seeing which images from there are used here. Also, a number of photos in the gallery are probably copyrighted (interior shot of Andrew Gonzales Hall, etc.), taken from other sources. Rmcsamson 13:06, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
- Based from my observations, there are only 4 or 5 self-made shots in the article. Or to be sure, i'll retake some of the pictures in the article. --Mithril tdd1 13:16, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit]What shade of green? green or dark green?--Howard the Duck 13:54, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
- I think the shade of green's specified in their website.Rmcsamson 14:13, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
- When I got there, I encountered "pantone green". What shade is that? --Howard the Duck 14:56, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
- From the looks of it, it's a darker shade I think. --Mithril Cloud 15:08, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
- The first Brothers who came to the Philippines were mostly Irish, hence the choice of green, in reference to Ireland, nicknamed the "Emerald Isles." On a strictly historical basis, I imagine, the green should be of the emerald shade. That's my two-cents' worth, anyway.Taurushero23 22:14, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Separation of Colleges of De La Salle University
[edit]I suggest the separation of the said article into individual college articles. So far I have created separate articles for CLA, CED and CCS. --Mithril Cloud 12:57, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
- I think it's unnecessary. The individual colleges don't have much scale outside their being grouped together as a unit, and individual articles will just lead to a user having to go through too many links. Rmcsamson 13:32, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
- I think, it is good enough. Duke University, which is a featured article has individual articles for its colleges. Locally, the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila has been split up. There's even Ateneo School of Law. But it all depends if the main articles gets really long. --Howard the Duck 13:42, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
- I've recently separated the COS article. Also, one article, CCS, is now growing with the help of contributors. Now only two colleges are lacking separate articles. --Mithril Cloud 16:07, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Colleges of De La Salle University is now a redirect. All of the colleges now have their own separate articles. -- Mithril Cloud 01:55, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
PE Building
[edit]What is it officially called? I've seen some official images and documents referring to it as Sports Center while another refers to it as Sports Complex? Is it interchangable or not? --Mithril Cloud 14:50, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
Its official name is Enrique Razon Sports Center. Informally, it is called Sports Complex.
Pamantasang De La Salle
[edit]Is it even necessary to place it? The Filipino name is used only on Filipino publications and not really official, unlike PLM where Pamatasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila is actually the official name. --Mithril Cloud 12:11, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- I guess its all right. Other Philippine articles give the Filipino translation (see Manila for example). --Howard the Duck 14:22, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- But Manila is locally refered as Maynila, so its appropriate. De La Salle University however, is rarely referred as Pamantasang De La Salle outside Filipino publications. Also, Ateneo's article doesn't have the Filipino translation in it. Again, let's wait for the opinion of others. On a related note, i wonder why Pamantasang De La Salle wasn't mentioned in the Tagalog DLSU article? --Mithril Cloud 15:15, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- You have a point, though. But I think it is harmless that a Tagalog translation is added. Few people know what DLSU-M means in Tagalog. --Howard the Duck 02:43, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
- Well, i guess let's leave it there for now. Although i'll move it to the infobox instead. --Mithril Cloud 10:05, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Lets redirect it to De La Salle Philippines. I think it's more correct. --Howard the Duck 14:22, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- The guy who moved DLSU to DLSU-Manila might move it again. His reason is that DLSU-Manila is registered to the SEC as De La Salle University, so he thinks its more appropriate that way. We might need third-party opinion about this. --Mithril Cloud 15:31, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- OK. But how about reviving the system page? It can be historical. Then we'll have a succession box at the bottom. --Howard the Duck 02:44, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit]I'm placing this review on hold because several of the pictures in the article are copyrighted without proper fair use rationales. Research Centers
[edit]i have a problem with the research centers in the sciences. for instance, the molecular biology unit (mbu) of dlsu is located under the science and technology research center (strc), but it is actually a separate unit within a unit. do you think this should be included or placed under the strc? here's the link for the mbu: http://www.dlsu.edu.ph/offices/mco/publications/achievers_inc/AI_vol3no2.pdf
- For the meantime, just place it under the STRC. --Mithril Cloud 15:02, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

De La Salle University-Manila is a private Catholic university located in Malate, Manila. The oldest campus of De La Salle Philippines, it was extablished on June 16, 1911 by the De La Salle Brothers at the request of Archbishop Jeremiah James Harty as a school exclusive for boys, but started accepting women in 1973. It is organized into six colleges, the Colleges of Business and Economics, Liberal Arts, Science, Engineering, Education, and Computer Studies, each offering degrees in the undergraduate and graduate level. Ten of its programs have been recognized by the Commission on Higher Education as Centers of Excellence, with five recognized as Centers of Development. It is the first of only two universities in the Philippines to earn a Level IV accreditation—the highest possible level—granted by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities.

DLSU-Manila ranked no.1 Philippine private university by THES-QS
[edit]- Article from 2401, the Official Newsletter of DLSU-Manila 06-November-2006. Volume 38. Number 13:
I hope this can be added in the Trivia portion. Information was obtained in a printed newsletter in the university, not obtained from the website.
203.76.244.185 12:57, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
- I've considered adding that information long ago, but i've thought that it might spark rivalry. If other editors would find it okay, then it shall be added. On an unrelated note, I didn't like the fact that they highlighted the rankings more than Br. Rafael's death. --Mithril Cloud 13:37, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
"De La Salle Vito Cruz Society (VCS-DLSU)"
[edit]An anonymous editor insists on adding this to the list of organizations, and when asked to provide a reference, simply replies that this is an accredited organization. I may not have looked around enough, but if www.dlsu.edu.ph is supposed to have an exhaustive list of accredited organizations, it isn't there.Rmcsamson 16:51, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

CCS as Center of Excellence
[edit]The college has received a congratulatory letter from CHED stating that the college is recognized as a Center of Excellence in Information Technology although there no formal announcement yet. You can visit [2]. Why did you revert my additions?
- Woops, it got included in a revert that was supposed for the list of presidents. --Mithril Cloud 12:27, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Mithril Cloud. I temporarily removed the listing of IT as a COE, since there's no source other than the SunStar article. There's no update from DLSU-Manila and CHED's website (or any of the other schools mentioned), at least as of this writing. So there's no way to verify it. Since La Salle updates its website regularly, I would've expected this to appear right away. Maybe this listing can wait. Rmcsamson 13:52, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
- Sure thing. Let's wait for the official announcement first. --Mithril Cloud 13:58, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

- Regarding the Lead: Per WP:Lead the lead needs to be a summary of all the topics raised in the article. I have yet to read the entire article but I can tell that the lead is not sufficient. I don't see much information on the history of the university and the various colleges that make up the university. There is no discussion of the former departments nor about student life. The lead also gives an entire paragraph to the various associations the university is in and accolades the university has acheived. This seems a bit out of balance given the large tracts of the article uncovered in the lead. In short the lead should be overhauled to better reflect the content of the article.
- In the history section there are several minor grammatical errors. Also it is under-referenced. In the early history sub-section there are two in-line citations in the first paragraph and then none for the rest of the section. WWII sub-section: one citation, post war recovery: one citation (same citation as in WWII sub-section), recent history: two citations. More referencing is needed for a large section like this. H1nkles (talk) 22:02, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- The Academics section is also significantly under referenced. I see two [citation needed] templates in the College sub-section along with the fact that the College of Liberal Arts has no in-line citation. There's no need to continually link Philippines, country names do not usually need to be linked. Watch use of the term AY 2009 - 2010. This acronym (which I assume is Academic Year) is not used anywhere else in the article and yet there are many references to various academic years. Consider changing.
- The IT department in the list of Centers of Excellence and Centers of Development has two in-line citations, the rest do not. Why?
- The Former Departments section is also under referenced. The Grade School sub-section has no in-line citations and the high school only has two. This should be improved.
- Two in-line citations in the Campus section more needed.
- Two in-line citations in the Student Life section more needed. H1nkles (talk) 22:21, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- I like that in the athletics section there is a paragraph about the scandal involving the two students who falsified their admission records and how that caused the university to miss the entire sports season. More on that later.
- There is a [citation needed] template that needs to be addressed in this section.
- My experience with reviewing articles on schools is that the articles are usually entirely weighted toward promoting the school. There is usually almost no negative aspects about the school in the article. This violates the bias and POV rules in Wikipedia and in my opinion they are some of the most egregious violations in the project. If it were not for the paragraph in the athletics section regarding the two boys mentioned above I would lump this article in with all the rest I have reviewed. It is very pro university with nearly no negative aspects. Not that I'm advocating digging up dirt but I would like to see editors take a critical look at the history of the university and bring in even the negative parts or embarassing aspects of the unversity's history.
- It is very obvious at a cursory reading that this university has financial resources. Where do they get their endowment? I can't believe they are able to fund 7 colleges and build these amazingly beautiful buildings solely on student tuition. Is there a foundation that is responsible for fund raising? I think this would be good to add to the article.
- Regarding the references, there are several dead links that need to be fixed: the references include 2, 14, 24, 28, 41 and 42. Also each reference needs to have the name of the publisher, and accessdate as a bare minimum. I would encourage author's name and work and date of article if those are available. The formatting for the reference section is haphazard at best.
- The images are good, well formatted and tagged.
In closing there is a lot to work on with this article if it is to meet the GA Criteria. I will put this article on hold for a week pending work. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me on my talk page. H1nkles (talk) 00:01, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
- Since no work has been done on this article due to the review I will delist. H1nkles (talk) 03:12, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
History
[edit]The history section is too long. And it's a shame that it has to be condensed. But it has to be done to conform with standards. Given that DLSU is a very historical institution, and sources are not really difficult to find, I am moving the current content of the history section to History of De La Salle University. Moray An Par (talk) 10:45, 14 May 2011 (UTC)
Help
[edit]I need help in finding DLSU's endowment. Thanks. Moray An Par (talk) 13:31, 14 May 2011 (UTC)
- Athletics too. Reliable references are quite hard to find. Moray An Par (talk) 12:29, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
The current figure is misleading. The link says that DLSU had less than P1 billion in net assets.
"The Academic Year 2009-2010 showed a jump in net revenue of P173 million or 532% compared to last year's P27.4 million, thereby growing the foundation's net assets to P940.34 million from P770.84 million in 2008-2009."
Ajesg (talk) 07:32, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
Campus size
[edit]Conflicting sources: Official site says 5.04 hectares (undated); undergraduate viewbook (2nd to the last page) says 6 (2011). I'm using 6 because it's dated. Some parts, including this part, of the site are possibly outdated. For example, DLSU said in 2008 that it'll stick to using De La Salle University and not De La Salle University–Manila but many sites still use the "Manila" suffix. Moray An Par (talk) 07:58, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
- I'm using this instead. It seems more accurate since it's a report on the matter. Moray An Par (talk) 05:01, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

1. Well-written: | ||
1a. the prose is clear, concise, and understandable to an appropriately broad audience; spelling and grammar are correct. | Many grammatical/writing quality errors
| |
1b. it complies with the Manual of Style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation. | The lead section does not comply as it is more than four paragraphs.
| |
2. Verifiable with no original research:
2a. it contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline.
2b. reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose). | Contradictory sources, is De Salle Phillipines a network of 17 or 18 institutions?
| |
2c. it contains no original research. | "The campus, which is relatively small in size for its large student population, suffers limited space. The bolded section is original research; although, the sources later back it up to an extent. The sentence is also grammatically incorrect. Ryan Vesey Review me! 05:05, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
3. Broad in its coverage:
3a. it addresses the main aspects of the topic. | It covers the major issues common to educational articles Ryan Vesey Review me! 05:05, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
3b. it stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style). | Use of summary style is good but some sections seem a little too detailed. 4. Neutral: it represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each. | Generally neutral, with some issues common to school articles and raised by H1nkles in the previous good article review. In addition there is a large emphasis on primary sources. Ryan Vesey Review me! 05:05, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
5. Stable: it does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute.
6. Illustrated, if possible, by media such as images, video, or audio:
6a. media are tagged with their copyright statuses, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content. | File:LSHall Front.jpg seems to have a problem with the formatting of its licensing but appears to be released under a proper license otherwise everything checks out Ryan Vesey Review me! 05:05, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
6b. media are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions. | Captions and images all check out Ryan Vesey Review me! 05:05, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
7. Overall assessment. | It is impossible to maintain neutrality with the high percentage of primary sources found in this article. In addition, the contradictory research, writing quality errors, and problems with the lead do not meet the good article criteria. This isn't a bad article, and correction of the lead section and writing quality will help this article improve. I certainly didn't include every negative or every positive aspect of this article, but the problems I have found show me that this article is not a valid good article candidate and are extensive to the point that an entirely new review will be necessary when they are completed. With that I am closing this as a failed nomination. Ryan Vesey Review me! 05:05, 1 August 2011 (UTC) |

Pre-war Lasallians save pre-war Ateneo
[edit]Greetings!
I'm new here btw.
Where are the sources that can confirm this section on the history of the University? From "History" section, subsection "Second World War" -->
"Before the Japanese Imperial Army could enter and ravage the city of Manila a contingent of young and brave Lasallites led by a Christian Brother marched on from Taft Avenue all the way towards the pre-war Ateneo de Manila Padre Faura campus. The old Ateneo campus is presently known today as the Robinson's Place, Manila when in WWII several Lasallites helped to save and secure the prized "Jesuit Bell" along with several Jesuit religious antiques before the Imperial Japanese Army could ransack the Blue Eagle's pre-war lair."
[edit]In the paragraph that comes after, the part about "La Salle students along with Ateneo students shared classes together" isn't in the sources! Can someone add more sources credibility to these claims? Pretty please?

DLSU-Laguna College as School of Innovation and Sustainability
[edit]Hello, looks like it's been almost 5 years since a talk topic (not made by bot) has been made. I'm not really interested in making edits on the larger page but focusing on the DLSU-Laguna section. I have firsthand information that DLSU-Laguna College has been designated the School of Innovation and Sustainability, made official for the current academic year's term; however, it seems that there are no proper sources or acknowledgment even in DLSU's official website (!), regarding this fact. I am quite puzzled about that to be honest. All I see referring to it in its proper name is through Facebook, and I don't think those can be used as references here. Or maybe I'm getting ahead of an official public announcement? Not really sure about that. TJPdemo (talk) 04:29, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
