[edit]Presidents who became prisoners was proposed for deletion. This page is an archive of the discussion about the proposed deletion. This page is no longer live. Further comments should be made on the article's talk page rather than here so that this page is preserved as an historic record. The result of the debate was MOVE AND KEEP
So what? I.e., would anyone look this up as a group, as opposed to wanting to know in some individual case? — Bill 22:07, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Move to List of presidents who were later imprisoned or something similar. May work better as a category. — Gwalla | Talk 23:18, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Lists are better than categories for this kind of thing. Suppose there are 100 interesting facts about someone. He can appear on 100 lists with no problems. But if he appears on 100 categories then the Categories section of his article is not likely to be useful. Gdr 23:53, 2004 Oct 25 (UTC)
- Agree with renaming, potentially interesting/useful list. How about a 'List of prisoners who became presidents' aswell? Darksun 11:56, 26 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Keep. Mark Richards 01:51, 27 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- It's interesting, with some modifications (such as Darksun's suggestion) it might prove to be a good article. Keep but modify. Inky 03:15, 27 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Keep and expand/elaborate. Radman1 06:19, 27 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Keep this is an interesting category
- Rename to Wikipedia standards. Gazpacho 12:59, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Probably needs a better name on other counts as well: I don't believe Mussolini was ever a "president". Perhaps expand slightly to "List of heads of State who were..." Then we could also include (for example) Louis XVI of France. Also, "later" begs the question: later than what? And why should it be less interesting to list heads of state who were imprisoned at some time before taking office: e.g. Nelson Mandela, Vaclav Havel? -- Jmabel | Talk 02:08, Oct 30, 2004 (UTC)
- Rename to Heads of State who were later imprisoned. Interesting. [[User:Dmn|Dmn / Դմն ]] 14:32, 30 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Rename. As to what Dmn mentioned. --*drew 14:37, 30 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Removed Benito Mussolini, He was not Head of state.
[edit]Mussolini was Head of Government, but King Emmanuel remained as Head of State. So I removed Mussolini
whoops! didnt read intro to article. sorry about that.
Shanekorte 05:03, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
- He has been added back as heads of regimes include heads of states and governments.--Jusjih 09:51, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
Add a list of heads of state who were imprisoned earlier?
[edit]Should we add a list of heads of state who were imprisoned earlier? Examples of my proposal includes Nelson Mandela and Chen Shui-bian as they were imprisoned before becoming heads of state.--Jusjih 16:45, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
The Title
[edit]I think it might be better to change the title to List of heads of regimes who were later imprisoned to make it more broad based. It would then be possible to include names of Presidents, Monarchs and Prime Ministers or other equivalent designations, for all time, and not merely the 20th century. User:LordGulliverofGalben
List order
[edit]As this list was out of definite order in any way, I just alphabetized it with consideration of different orders of surnames first and given names first. However, feel free to change as needed even though I have tried to check everything.--Jusjih 17:52, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
- I am converting the list to a sortable table with additional info that would be useful.--Jusjih 09:20, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
- I would like to ask if we should add additional info such as "Born !! Took office !! Position !! Left office !! Imprisoned !! Died !! Notes" as I have finished indexing the surnames. You may see a few text codes that I hide from reading but show when editing as an initial demonstration when clicking "edit this page". If the answer is yes, then I will go ahead. Otherwise, these test codes may be removed.--Jusjih 09:51, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
- I agree that there should be more detail, but I don't think the categories "born" and "took office" are particularly relevant to this page. The others are OK. "Notes" should include the offense the person was imprisoned for. —Sesel 15:14, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
- I just tested my revised new sortable table at List of former heads of regimes who were sentenced to death. Instead of a separate columns "took office" and "Left Office", I just tried "Positions" with the years. However, as some have been prime ministers and presidents, maybe we should unify an order. By time or by rank?--Jusjih 17:02, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
References badly lacking
[edit]Since this is only a list, maybe it doesn't need documentation here, but if a name belongs on this list, the corresponding Wikipedia article needs to state that the person was imprisoned (and that fact, of course, needs references). For example, the Gorbachev and Khrushchev articles don't say that they were imprisoned after their rule, and I don't think they really were. Mdmcginn 17:00, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
- I am hiding them from readers' view now. When any editors are sure that they were not later imprisoned, they may be removed from the edit box completely. Gorbachev was taken hostage in a failed coup. That should probably not be counted as being later imprisoned here.--Jusjih 14:42, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Probable update needed

[edit]@Blasstes:,
thank you, but just because some were not convited or later acquitted, it does not necessarily mean they were not imprisoned...so re-add anyone who you deleted in this manner, other wise I have to undo your precious edits...(KIENGIR (talk) 17:51, 21 June 2020 (UTC))
- I do not appreciate being threatened after the work I have just put into this article, especially when most had no sources whatsoever. I have gone through the entire list and sourced everyone who has been jailed (whether put in jail or convicted), those no longer on the list had no references to being jailed or convicted. This is a list for those who have gone to jail for crimes. Blasstes (talk) 08:42, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Blasstes:,
- Don't get me wrong, I expressed I appreciate your work. Thanks for the clarification, maybe you agree now it was needed.(KIENGIR (talk) 23:09, 24 June 2020 (UTC))
Orphaned references in List of heads of government who were later imprisoned
[edit]I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of List of heads of government who were later imprisoned's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Nation States?
[edit]I see many Regional Government head of executives. I ask for a decision about them, in my opinion their inclusion it is not pertinent.Consbuonomo (talk) 07:51, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
Executions?
[edit]I may be mistaken, but why are executions listed? Technically, executing someone doesn't qualify as imprisonment. LilianaUwU (talk / contributions) 01:15, 16 March 2023 (UTC)
Geographic error
[edit]Mexico is in N America not S America. 73.25.160.47 (talk) 14:43, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
- I noticed this error too with the Central American countries, as the North America section only lists the Caribbean countries and the Caribbean British Overseas Territories, and probably Canada and the US too, but no Canadian prime ministers nor US Presidents have ever been imprisoned (although Donald Trump is getting close to imprisonment for treason). I'll fix this issue soon though. BlakeIsHereStudios (talk) 14:46, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
Regional president aren't italian president!
[edit]Regional president aren't Italian President or Italian Prime Minister! This is a fake list. REMOVE THEM. 151.62.191.19 (talk) 13:24, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
- The real problem is that Berlusconi, for example, has never been imprisoned.
- I agree that regional president does not count in this list, but since it's correctly written that they were president of "name of the region", it could be clear enough. I'm going to add some notes on that. Pipinoiltop (talk) 12:58, 14 May 2023 (UTC)
- Can you remove Berlusconi? He was never imprisoned, neither at home. 79.40.72.49 (talk) 14:19, 14 May 2023 (UTC)
Rename the page
[edit]As the page lists both heads of state and heads of government, we should rename the page to "List of heads of state & government who were later imprisoned", or if we add leaders who were imprisoned before taking office, just "List of heads of state & government who were imprisoned". BlakeIsHereStudios (talk) 14:37, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
Geography
[edit]It needs to be noted that Central American countries should not be listed in the South American category. They are, in fact, part of North America. 76.113.17.70 (talk) 14:52, 14 June 2023 (UTC)
Nicola Sturgeon
[edit]Nicola Sturgeon has not been imprisoned. She has not even been charged with any offence. 94.175.155.100 (talk) 21:26, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
- She was imprisoned when she was arrested (house arrested). 213.177.132.14 (talk) 06:21, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Disagree entirely - that's not what house arrest means. No imprisonment took place. Cameronbell76 (talk) 17:07, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
Criteria needs to be tightened
[edit]Quite the rogues gallery but there are a few problems. Nicola Sturgeon was arrested but not charged. If she is to be included, Donald Trump should be also. Burke and O'Connor were first ministers in state governments. If heads of sub-governments are to be included, the list is going to be several times longer. E.g. Rob Blagojevich, former governor of Illinois. WmDKing (talk) 08:47, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
