Old school
[edit]My old school. Just thought I'd mention it, that's all :) Dan100 17:56, Mar 5, 2005 (UTC)
Those amazing results are achieved at the expense of less able pupils, whose parents are quietly encouraged to take them elsewhere, so as not to sully the league tables. This practice is as common now as it was 20 years ago, though at least then the majority of pupils were actually from Reading. Now most entrants are from prep schools in other parts of the county. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.10.33.224 (talk • contribs).
The vast majority of Reading children are crammed into failing comprehensives which have nowhere near the same level of funding and facilities.
- quietly discouraged? its not that subtle. as a former pupil, id say the school is openly and unashamedly elitist, for better or worse. the way i saw it, the attitude was that the "best" pupils deserved the "best" schooling (inverted commas used as many people inside and outside the school would debate both these points) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 87.81.222.30 (talk • contribs).
- I go to the school, and I would say that 70% of my year came from state-funded schools. The other 30% are from prep schools, but most of these went to prep schools because they push their students much harder to get into the grammar schools. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by JamieScuffell (talk • contribs).
- "failing comprehensives which have nowhere near the same level of funding and facilities" Take a look at other schools in Reading in terms of both funding and facilities and you'll find that Reading School finds itself struggling to compete. 94.174.80.63 (talk) 01:17, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Hey, my old school as well - and I'm a half-celebrity as well - was on the UK version of Beauty and the Geek, wonder if that should go on there... Heh JebJoya 03:09, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

my old School too. The point about Classics/Latin. When i was going through gcses and deciding A-levels, there were two people in the year wanting to study A-Level Latin and 14 for A-Level Classics. The school ran Latin instead of Classics at A-Level. Students and parents weren't happy, during a meeting with the headmaster he basically explained that he was being forced to run Latin A-Level to maintain the reputation of the school. Acairns 13:41, 12th May 2006 - I work for the BBC, does that count me as a minor celebrity? :-)
- ACairns - No relation to John perchance? Went on a Maths Camp with him :) Heh. As for the latin arguement, I'm quite surprised that was the case - I didn't realise either that Latin was seen as that much more elite at A-level than Classics, or that the school cared that much... Meh, goes to show how out of touch the Sciency students are with the Artsy ones :) --JebJoya 15:14, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
- Belated addition - My nephew ACairns is first cousin to my son Jon. I took you and Jon to the UKMC Summer Camp in Birmingham! Ian Cairns 13:05, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
With respect, might I remind people of the talk page guidelines, specifically the sentance "Keep on topic: Talk pages are for discussing the article, not for general conversation about the article's subject (much less other subjects). Keep discussions on the topic of how to improve the associated article. Irrelevant discussions are subject to removal.". TheIslander 16:38, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
School site section
[edit]Couls someone write more about the history of the schools site - as it has a long history, ti would be a shame to miss out on it.
dates would also be helpful —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Warlorddagaz (talk • contribs).
Picture
[edit]just a security note - is it OK to have images of children on the internet - I know it is petty, but in todays world, this might be frowned upon - just a point to consider - maybe a photo of the school without the children might be better. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Warlorddagaz (talk • contribs).
Sad but true - taken down for now - still available here: Image:Reading_school_berks_uk.jpg. I dont have another pic anyone else? Zephyris 09:14, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- It's probably as OK as any pictures of adults (image rights and so forth). If you're really concerned, just reduce the image size to make identification from the photo impossible. In the more general sense, I think it's likely that predators are aware that there are children at grammar schools, so you're not exactly passing on any new information... --Eyrian 11:20, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- Fair enough... Zephyris 13:53, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
"Grammar boys are simply the best"
[edit]Is this quote needed in the article? 0L1 18:54, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
- Actually that isn't a quote, it's the title of the article which I got statistics about KS3 results from. Ian F. 15:33, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
"New Website Links"
[edit]Although the following links are password protected they are very useful for staff and pupils of the school: Reading School Webmail This link is for pupils and teachers to check their emails at home - very useful and informative. Reading School Media Server This is a very useful link for teachers and pupils to access the school's media server - allowing pupils and teachers useful information, websites, pictures for their coursework and homework, and also allows free discussion about the news and the school. The only people wanting to access these services is pupils and teachers, which is ok because they have their own password and can access both. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Fish4bananas (talk • contribs) 20:21, 15 January 2007 (UTC).
If the only people who can access the website are the staff and the pupils then the link should go on the school's own website not in a Wikipedia article. There is no point putting an external link on an article in an encylopaedia when no one else can access it. If you want a handy link to the school's webmail then you should ask the school or the Parents' Association to add the link to their websites. The article has potentially a worldwide readership. It is not supposed to provide a service to the school's staff and parents! See WP:EL for the guidelines on external links. Dahliarose 22:52, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
Architecture assessment
[edit]It should be noted that the assessment is carried out from the perspective of the architecture wikiproject; because the article predominantly concerns itself with a description and history of the school it has received a 'stub' rating. If the architectural aspects of the article are added to, please drop us a line at WP:ARCHA for a further review. Many thanks. --Mcginnly | Natter 11:12, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
Notable old Redigensians
[edit]As a near contemporary of his, I have taken out Mike Oldfield, as no one I have asked can remember him being there. I'd be only too happy to be proved wrong. TobyJ 12:53, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
And again. TobyJ 08:25, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
While not intentionally raining on his parade, I don't think David Faria is deserving of a place on "Notable ORs" at this present time. Besides, if you added Faria, you'd then need to add James Paul, Seb Bunyan and Thomas Pointer as well, wouldn't you? Where do you then draw the line? 81.158.112.16 (talk) 23:08, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
New Picture
[edit]Does anyone think someone should add teacher list with photos? I have photo of Mr Hurst during a charity week.
- Unfortunately I don't think your photo can be used as you would have to get permission from the boys' parents. I think it should probably also be removed from this page as well. It's not really appropriate to have a list of teachers as it would be of no interest to anyone outside the school, and would be impossible to verify and maintain. Dahliarose 22:55, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
- It wouldn't impossible to verify or maintain - staff lists are easily obtained from the school. However, I agree that it would not be much use, and that photo's would not be appropriate--Warlorddagaz 19:52, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

NO- target for vandalism (e.g unfounded rumours (concerning members of staff) YGTP.
Co-ordinates
[edit]Are these co-ordinates correct? If I enter 51.2654, 00.5718 into Google Earth I end up just south of Bearsted, Kent. However, if I search on the school name these are the co-ordinates which Google Earth provides. Any ideas?Dahliarose 12:10, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
- As no one was able to answer this question I've now used the co-ordinate template at the bottom of the page to get the co-ordinates to read correctly in the degrees, minutes and seconds format. Dahliarose 14:53, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
Kindred Spirts- they do exist, and I am currently penning an article on them

Your choice —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.125.49.197 (talk) 20:25, 9 December 2007
- Take a close look at what I wrote - I stated that they weren't notable, not that they didn't exist. Regardless, I look forward to your new article, as then the community can judge notability - unfortunatly I can't, as my knowledge on music is limited. If they're judged to be non-notable, then it'll have to go. Hopefully they are notable, in which case of course the mention can stay, but let's keep it consistent with the other entries for living ORs, i.e. a one-phrase example of what they are, and not an entire advertisement on them. In the future, please ensure that you read edit summaries correctly, to avoid the possibility of incorrectly accusing someone. TheIslander 22:05, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
- (Note: my second edit summary on this matter, "Google search throws up nothing - non-notable, as previously stated.", should in fact have read "Google search throws up nothing notable - non-notable, as previously stated." My mistake. Still, both that and the previous comment make it clear that I was refering to notability, and not mere existance. TheIslander 22:09, 9 December 2007 (UTC))
- Righty. The article on Alok Prasad has now been speedy-deleted twice for failing WP:A7, i.e. he was non-notable. By that logic, he's not notable here either, and so should not remain. TheIslander 19:39, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
Addington
[edit]This was discussed in the Old Redingensian magazine a few years back, with the result that Addington was almost certainly NOT a pupil at Reading School. I am therefore removing him from the list of notable ORs. If anyone has information further to the magazine articles, then please correct this! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.65.176.196 (talk) 13:01, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
Why is there a board in Big School saying he went there? Tomskeet18 (talk) 23:05, 7 December 2017 (UTC)
- Presumably more information came to light. Is the board described in a publication anywhere? If so, that could be used as a source to add Addington to the list. Robminchin (talk) 01:22, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
