Does anybody know the history of this term? I'm interested whether it was first applied to tattoos and piercings and then taken on by critics of avant garde art, or whether it started out as a term in art criticism to refer to Rudolf Schwazkogler and others, and only then used to refer to more mainstream forms. I suppose it began to be used by critics in the late 1960s if that's any help (thought that's a half-guess and I may be wrong). --Camembert

I'm sorry, but I've removed this from the article:

New York based Shishaldin has experimented with extremes of human endurance involving exercise, diet, and induced lactation. She recently ran the 26 mile New York Marathon as part of a performance.

and an external link to her website. I don't mind us having an article on her, but I think that mentioning her in this article alongside such well known figures as Oppenheim and Abramovic gives a rather inflated sense of her importance. If somebody can give a source--a reference work or essay or something like that--which shows she is regarded with equal regard as these people, or that she's considered a leading contemporary proponent of body art, then I won't have a problem with the reference to her going back in. --Camembert

Vajazzling: i aded a section and it got pulled???? user: patbahn —Preceding undated comment added 03:52, 24 May 2010 (UTC).[reply]

Well, she was featured on the cover of the Coagula Art Journal and is starting to get a bit of attention. This is an article by a fairly significant curator http://www.fashionwiredaily.com/articles/article.weml?articles_link=13685

I think it is a bit dangerous to only refer to the artists listed as the only proponents of what is not an obsolete art form. If people cant view this forum as a place to find out about the cutting edge and new innovations it will quickly become stagnant.

This Being an encyclopedia and all ,should I consider great represenatation of body art imagery that border nudity to be placed here? We would'nt want to uphold knowledge after all. Yet Somehow I sensing I'tl be deleted first and debated later. The Procrastinator 18:19, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rhythm 0

[edit]

I can't find any citation to support the claims in the paragraph on Rhythm 0 that the performance was ended by police. In fact, sources that I can find (http://ejw.sagepub.com/cgi/reprint/11/3/295.pdf, Marina_Abramovic#Rhythm_0.2C_1974) seem to indicate that the performance continued for the intended 6 hour duration. I realize that the piece was performed more than once, but until someone finds a citation, I've removed the mention of police, and added a more accurate description of the performance.

I've further removed the suggestion that the performance was ended by a scuffle over the loaded gun, and added that there is confusion over how exactly the event ended, as well as sources backing this up. --Bráz1984 — Preceding undated comment added 13:20, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification Needed

[edit]

"After the will of decompartmentalization of the artistic categories and inversion of the middle-class values strongly anchored in the corporal art of the years 1970.."

I don't understand this, it needs clarification.... I have removed it for now.

Revision &/or Merge prod

[edit]

I've just made some additions, deletions, condensing, expanding, so on, so on... because, sorry to have to say it, but this page is an embarrassment in need of major attention by a knowledgable & neutral party. I think a possible reason for this wiki's sad state is that people are directing more attention to the Body painting wiki instead. Qualified contributors should either focus there attention here, OR, thought should be given as to whether there should be a MERGE. Seems to me, body PAINTING is in fact just a TYPE of body ART. Maybe merge here with a proper re-direct?

Also: I've added the Info Box BUT it's not the correct one, therefore anyone who may be able to find/create a suitable box of some sort, please! Penwatchdog (talk) 16:40, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Split?

[edit]

I would venture that Body Art as an entry could refer to several distinct items: At least body art as (semi-)permanent decoration of the human body (tattoos, piercing, scarification, branding) and Body Art as a tendency in 60's visual arts and onward (Viennese actionism, Acconci, Oppenheim, Abramovic). Both would merit their own article and do not have enough in common to be treated in one article. 195.241.161.238 (talk) 17:41, 2 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. I would support moving the content that refers to body art as a subset of performance art to a new article or add to Performance_art and keep this page to cover body decoration. http://www.getty.edu/vow/AATFullDisplay?find=body+art&logic=AND&note=&english=N&prev_page=1&subjectid=300386734 makes a useful distinction between body as support and body as medium.
