The Ganges River dolphin (Platanista gangetica gangetica) is a species of river dolphin hat lives in the Ganges rivers of south Asia.[2]It is related to the much smaller Indus River Dolphin.
It was recognized as a separate species in the 70's.[3] It is also known by the Name Susu.
Physical appearance
[edit]The Ganges River Dolphin has rectaguler ridge dorsal fin and females tend to be larger than males.[4] Ganges River Dolphins usually have a Tan,Chocolate Brown or light blue. It has a large elongated beak with sharp and very pointy teeth like inmost river Dolphins. They have a large melon head used for echolocation because they can not see very well. There eyes are usually small due to the cloudy water.[5]Ganges river Dolphins are usually 2.2-2.6 meters (7.7-8.5ft)
Behavior
[edit]The Ganges River Dolphins usually come in pairs or there just single and are not known to do acrobatic gestures near boats or when there distressed.Little is known about there behavior because there usually shy around boats and are hard to observe. They are known to breach however this is rare.[6]
Distribution
[edit]Ganges River Dolphins are usally found in Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna and the Karnaphuli-Sangu river systems. They also are found in a few other rivers.[7] They are the National Aquatic animal of India.[8]
Status
[edit]This animal is endangered due pollution and over fishing for their oil.[9]
Popular culture
[edit]The Ganges river Dolphin does not appear a lot. It Now and then is featured in a documentary.
